A study published in 2007 in the journal Neurology observed people in three cities in France. It showed that older women who drink three cups of coffee or more a day suffered less "cognitive decline" than women who drank less coffee.
They studied men and women aged 65 and older who did not yet have cognitive problems.
Caffeine is a brain stimulant in both men and women. It helps wakefullness and attention, and improves mood. The study wanted to know if there was a protective effect on the brain too.
Results:
Women who drink three or more cups of coffe a day experience a slower decline in cognitive abilities.
Men do not show the same effect.
coffee and tea have an equal effect: caffeine is the determinant.
this effect is seen more as the women grow older:
it does not protect from dementia / alzheimers
long term memory tests are the most affected
